this saturday evening (sept 2)
kmoca is hosting a very special opening reception
for the show “1000+”
by outsider artist neil vandervloed.

this show took neil years to create and has been presented so far in seattle
and st. louis. this is its east coast debut. each of the over 1,000 (for real--they’re small) paintings is unique, painstakingly crafted,
fun to look at, and affordable. as a collection, the effect is both dazzling and dizzying.

about neil:
before undertaking this project, neil did paintings on actual automobiles
which he entered in demolition derbys and drove until they were destroyed.
in one instance the car/art caught fire while neil was driving.

originally from the hudson valley, neil has lived in seattle for the last 15
years, but he will be on hand opening night for those who would like to meet
this incredibly interesting artist in addition to seeing his work.

the reception goes from 5 to 7pm.
after the reception will be a special performance by
*My Other Car Is Silver*
and a dj set by raissa st.pierre.

the show will continue to be on display until saturday september 30.
kmoca’s regular hours are saturdays 12 to 4 or by appointment.

may show: malcolm burn's documentary preview and photographs

We have a new show and a special film preview this
Saturday May 6 from 5-7pm. It's premiere of Malcolm
Burn's documentary. Malcolm Burn is a musician and
producer who lives in the hills above Rondout, where
he has discovered his powers as a filmmaker as well.

Anyone who has ever walked along West Chestnut Street may have noticed what appears to be some sort of half-way house. While most people would keep walking past, Malcolm went inside and introduced himself. Then he went home and got his camera. He spent the next year of his life making this film.

The people who live at 106 W. Chestnut Street live with various forms of mental illness and have been forced out of just about every place else, but here they've become a family for each other. This is what Malcolm's film is all about. The preview is about 17 minutes long and will be running in a continuous loop. And the still photography which will be hanging on the walls is equally remarkable.

We're starting a weekly or every other weekly DIY craft event at kmoca. saturdays (or sundays, not sure yet) from noon until whenever. if anyone has ideas or wants to come and work on projects there are two sewing machines, a serger, various fabrics, scissors, thread and some other resources. We have a collection of books on sewing, crafts and toy making. the thought here is to make things to later sell in the kmoca museum store or just work on group projects or personal projects, such as recycling and re-making of clothes with old and new fabrics. also: swapmeets, trunk shows from different clothes and thrift shops around kingston. we want to start it the last weekend of april or first weekend of may. let us know what you think.

april show: andy uzzle

As a crime scene photographer for the New York Post, Andy Uzzle chased ambulances. He rode his bicycle around Brooklyn, relying on police scanners to determine his next shooting locale. This photograph was taken when Uzzle heard about a fire over his scanner; by the time he reached the scene, three families had been rescued from the building, and Police Officer Miller was in the process of carrying out an elderly tenant. Uzzle studied under his father, famed photographer Burt Uzzle, but has since made a name for himself. He is aggressive in his pursuit of an interesting shot: When Uzzle was found lurking outside Kit Culkin's Manhattan home, the burly celebrity father slugged him. His work has appeared in Time, Newsweek, Sports Illustrated, and various New York dailies. He was voted one of the top 10 journalists worldwide by Brill's Content in 1999. Uzzle will be featured in "Hard News: Crime Scenes And Other Urban Images" at the newly opened KMoCA, at 105 Abeel Street, from April 1 through 29. www.kmoca.org.
